Portland’s The Sports Bra is the nation’s first women’s sports bar, dedicated to showcasing only women’s sports. Founded by Portland chef Jenny Nguyen in 2022, it quickly became a beloved gathering place for fans. Now “The Bra” is set to expand through franchising, bringing more people together to celebrate women’s sports. It’s no surprise this movement started and thrived in Portland—a city known for its inclusive, welcoming spirit.

Portland has been leading the way in eco-friendly innovation for decades. In 1971, the Oregon Bottle Bill-the first of its kind in the U.S.—incentivized recycling with refunds for returned bottles and cans, reducing litter and creating a culture of reuse. Fast forward to 2011, and Portland made history again as the first U.S. city to ban plastic bags, reinforcing its commitment to a cleaner, greener future.

The city’s name was chosen in a coin flip. In 1845, founders Asa Lovejoy (of Boston, Massachusetts) and Francis Pettygrove (of Portland, Maine) settled the city’s name with a three-flip coin toss—and Portland won! The legendary Portland Penny is on display at the Oregon Historical Society Museum in Downtown Portland.
